Up and Coming – August

Up and Coming

The last month saw some interesting books and films being explored on here. Some were a disappointment, others better than I expected. The thing I am most proud about last month was actually managed to stick to each review – it definitely kept me moving. It also meant that I branched out a little on the type of books I was reading and films I was watching.

I’m hoping this month is going to be just as good. Here is what I’m planning for August:

Up and Coming 1Books: Having seen the film, I’ve finally just read Gone Girl. It didn’t engage me too well but I’m glad to have read it. This month is going to be a mixture of re-reads and reading new things.

Having read The Mortal Instruments last year, I’ve been wanting to read The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare ever since. So I have ordered them from the library and am looking forward to being transported back into the Shadowhunter world again. I have they are as charming and gripping as her first series was.

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson and The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry are both books I’ve had on my shelf for a few years. I know I’ve read them. But I have no recollection of what the plot is for either. I figured it was time to refresh my memory on that front and give them both a re-read (and a review, for that matter).

The final book I’m planning I found on my dad’s bookcase: The Last Legion by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. After reading Ben Kane last month, I have developed a real taste for novels set in the Roman period. It will be interesting to see how other authors explore that same time period.Up and Coming 2

Films/TV: after only one TV review last month, I’ve got a couple planned this time. Humans finished over the weekend so I’m planning a review for that this week. I’m also watching the second series of Arrow, so I’m hoping some thoughts and feelings on that will be coming forth in a few week’s time.

I’m looking forward to finally seeing Insurgent as well. I enjoyed Divergent, but wasn’t overly keen on the books. It’s going to be interesting to see how they adapt it for the screen and what changes.

I also wanted to see Cinderella when it came out but missed my chance. Now it is out on DVD, I’m looking forward to seeing what I think – I’ve heard some very mixed reviews so that could be an interesting watch.

I’m also planning to look at what inspires me as an author and starting a few university posts now it has got to that time of year. This month’s will focus on whether or not you should go with the big results day looming.

Have you read/watched anything that I have planned? If so, let me know in the comments what you thought and whether you would recommend it or not. Have a great month, everyone!
