Time for another book tag as it is the end of the month. This time, it is one about characters. Without any further ado, let’s get going. I did realise answering this how hard it is trying to remember what you’ve read/how you felt about it. You’ll probably notice most of the books I’m referencing are the ones I’ve recently reviewed.
1. Who is the best kick-ass character?
Will Herondale from The Infernal Devices. There might be some hidden vulnerability there but he literally doesn’t let anything stand in his way and will take it down either by sass or sword, depending on the situation. Love him. Although he is very closely followed by Sacha from The Secret Fire – pretty much for the same reasons.
2. Which character do you most dislike?
Wormtail in Harry Potter. Just because he is such a treacherous snake and acts out of fear rather than any motivation. Sloan from The Inheritcan Cycle comes in very close second though – only doesn’t win because he does have the chance for redemption.
3. If you could date any fictional character, who would it be and why?
Jem (James) from The Infernal Devices. Just because he has the sass and sword that Will does (see question 1), but also the patience and kindness that Will lacks in. As his books are set in the 18thC, he even comes with the frock coat and manners of a true gentleman. And he plays the violin like a pro – what’s not to like?
4. If you could change a character in any way, what would it be and why?
I want to say Jorg from The Broken Empire trilogy to stop him being so broken, but that would rewrite the entire books. So I’m going to say…Nick from Fangirl and stop him from being a cheat. Because all of us writers/readers need to know there are cute guys just as passionate about it as we are.
5. What character to you made all the wrong choices that didn’t add anything to the book?
Luke in The 100 trilogy. He had such extreme reactions to everything that Glass did, and then ended up by her side anyway so it really didn’t need to happen. He went from love to hate too quickly and it didn’t change the outcome apart from make her mope. Made the book boring in those parts.
6. Which character was the best villain you love to hate?
Murtagh in Eragon. No question. Well, technically I just loved him. But for the parts of the book where he was a villain and wreaking destruction on anything/everything, I still loved him.
7. Favourite side-kick character with the most heart?
Orik from Eragon (anyone getting a feeling what my favourite book is?) But who wouldn’t want a dwarf watching out for you – and he is such an awesome friend to Eragon that he would follow him anywhere if that was what was required of him. I’d like to get me an Orik please, anyone know where from?
8. Favourite Fictional Romance?
Tessa/Will/James. Okay, technically a triangle. But there is so much love between these three, it just breaks your heart. And the fact it doesn’t even drift towards the jealousy route just makes it even more perfect. Will and Jem are just as strong as Will/Tessa & Tessa/Jem. Just want to squish them all together.
9. What character do you think is the strongest?
Ouch, this is a tough one. I’m going to say Norra from The Demon’s Grave. She literally walks through Hell and is prepared to stay there if it means saving her friends, despite being utterly terrified. Would like to see Harry Potter do that!
10. Best Protagonist?
All of them? Do you know, I’m not sure I actually have one. The protagonist makes the book for me so if forced to pick I’d say Eragon just because they are my favourite books. But so many of them have their strengths and make me like them for different reasons, I’m not sure I can actually compare them.
There we go, my look at some of my loves/hates. It’s so hard remembering characters considering the amount of books I’ve just read – I know who my favourites are, put it that way. Have a go at the tag and let me know what you end up with for some of the answers?
