Theatre Review: Kinky Boots

I’m loving these theatre trips at the moment! I’m taking the time to see shows that I’ve always wanted to see and can justify spending the money now that I’m earning. It’s also a good chance to spend some quality time with my mum and we certainly have both a good catch-up and a laugh on these evenings out.

This time, we went to see Kinky Boots. One of the best things I’ve seen: it was hilarious, awe-inspiring and meaningful all at the same time. Mum had seen it before but I hadn’t – not even the film. I had no idea what the plot-line was or what to expect. It meant that I had no expectations and was completely open-minded.

Should I admit that I was seriously jealous of how well those men could walk in heels? I’m not talking about small platforms, I’m talking about full stilettoes.  And I don’t mean walking either; dancing, gymnastics, the whole lot. I can barely stand up in a pair of heels: anyone that can go dancing across a stage in front of a full audience in heels that size deserves the utmost respect, whether they are men or women!

The dialogue/songs were so funny – there are literal laugh out loud moments. But there are also some poignant moments and a lot about being true to yourself, even if it is not what your parents’ had planned for you. I guess every show needs a moral to the story.

I noticed a few small children in the audience and wondered quite how much went over their heads. But I also wondered how inspiring a show like this would be to a small child: the entire story is focused on acceptance for those who want to do things differently compared to the norm.

Theatre shows are hard to review because you can’t capture in words the atmosphere, the buzz and the sheer entertainment of watching something like this on stage – it doesn’t do it justice. There was a fully deserved standing ovation from the entire theatre at the end and I think that sums it up more than I can attempt to.

I mentioned justifying the cost at the beginning. The great thing with the shows we have been going to see is that we have got discounted tickets every time. We saved over £20 per ticket going to see this, but the seats were absolutely fine.

I also got a TasteCard through work just a few weeks before. We went for a very yummy Bella Italia before the show (you could see the theatre from the restaurant, it was that close) and by using the card, got 2-4-1 on all the food. With a bit of shopping around, so to speak, it’s possible to have a great night out without it costing a fortune.

If this show hasn’t come to an end already, I know it is due to soon. I’m so glad I got the chance to see it before it finished!
