Television Review: Supergirl, Season 3

Supergirl Season 3

Show: Supergirl, season 3

Company:  DC Entertainment

Date: 2018

Plot: Kara is grappling with the sacrifices she’s made and deciding if she should give up her human identity altogether.  Being human and vulnerable is hard.  Maybe she’s better off embracing her alien DNA and only being the “Girl of Steel.” As Kara struggles with her path forward, she continues to work with the DEO to battle all threats to National City, including new villains, Morgan Edge (Adrian Pasdar), and the “Worldkiller,” known as Reign (new series regular Odette Annable).

Season 1 | Season 2

I’m currently waiting for the final few episodes of Arrow and Flash to be made available so I can complete those reviews. In the meantime, I needed my fix of Arrowverse heroes and what better way to continue the adventure than returning to Supergirl?

The first thing to note is – back in the day – I was a big Smallville fan. I love how this is hinting towards that world, indicating this is a continuation of that timeline rather than something new. The constant references make me feel I’m going to be starting a re-watch soon.

The second thing that really caught my attention is this season is definitely about Supergirl, rather than Kara Denvers. The amount of screen-time Kara got seemed significantly less than in previous seasons. We’ve got to know her human side with romance and friendship of the past two seasons, now it’s time to see the hero.

Is it cliché to say the threat is greater in this series? It seems that is the case with every series, superhero or not. But the difference here is that, previously, Kara could defeat the enemy if she listened to herself. This time, it’s more about learning to work as a team and that one person alone isn’t enough.

For a story about superheroes, fighting aliens and protecting the world from alien threats, the part I find most moving is how human the stories are.

Reunited with his long-lost father, J’onn has his newfound happiness stripped away as his father succumbs to dementia. It’s a painful and heartfelt story and a reminder that anyone can be affected: rich or poor; man or woman; alien or human? Putting aside the alien technology, it was handled with dignity and a moving story that sees J’onn’s human nature more effectively than previous storylines.

Alex thinks she has found happiness; engaged to be married to the love of her life. But fate has other ideas – and it’s not an alien threat that splits the happy couple up, but a very real problem: one wants children and the other doesn’t. Again, it is a story relatable and understandable and more moving than any alien threat.

In terms of character development, it’s fair to say Kara is more balanced – she doesn’t see things in black and white as she has done previously and is prepared to learn, even if that means dealing with a human annoyance of emotions and feelings.

I also liked that a new character developing powers (with a twist) wasn’t a straightforward divide between good and evil: having powers didn’t completely change the ordinary person behind that character – which seems an ironic thing to say consider the plot and trying to avoid spoilers.

I really liked this series: the alien threat was stronger but so were the emotions of the characters and it made it a moving and relatable season. Supergirl is much stronger in herself by the end, making me hope the next series are going to go further exploring her character.

  2. I’ve never managed to get into the superhero genre of shows, except for smallville but I think that was more motivated by my huge crush on Tom Welling who played Clark 😂 I like how you broke down all the different elements within this season, going in to detail with your highlights as well. I hope you continue to enjoy the show in the next seasons and beyond x

  6. I’ve never seen an episode. I like the comic book stuff, but I don’t watch a huge amount of TV…at least of my own choosing and not just what the kids want to watch 😂

If I found the time to watch it, I think I’d like it.

  10. I started watching out all three: Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl, but life got busy and I lost track of things. Nevertheless, I’d love to take it up and finish watching them, especially since I hear that they are concluding (or have concluded?) Arrow already.

  13. I love Supergirl! I’ve been a fan of Melissa Benoist since Glee and I was so excited when she was cast as Supergirl. I love the relationship between Kara and Alex. It’s one of my favourite sisterly bonds! I haven’t watched all of season 5 yet but I’m hoping to finish it soon. I can’t wait to see what they do for the next season.
