3 Days in New York + Fulfilling Dreams

I’d never been to New York before but when the opportunity came up with work, I jumped at being able to add some tourist days on.

I’ve always had a dream to write in New York but never thought I’d get the opportunity to do it. Now it seems I need a new writing dream – still buzzing that I’ve had not one, but two writing sessions there!

Day 1

I arrived in Manhattan on Thursday evening from downtown. I wanted to see what I felt like doing rather than making solid plans.

Exploring was the way to go!

My first stop was Times Square but found it underwhelming. I was expecting more, and although the screens were cool, it was too busy to hang around. I asked about Broadway tickets, but at over $100, they were way out of budget.

I walked down to Grand Central Station and had a roam around there. It’s such an awe-inspiring and beautiful building, with decorated ceilings. I can hardly imagine what it is like to commute from there – if people do!

The next stop was the library. Again, jaw-dropping building. I had a look around inside and this was where I found my writing spot. An hour and a half later and I was 3000 words better off!

Still feeling like exploring, I continued down to the Empire State Building, onto Madison Square Gardens and then the Flat Iron building (my aunt challenged me to find it).

It was bitterly cold that day though, so after 22000+ steps, I headed back to the hotel to crash.

Day 2

I didn’t do nearly as much, but somehow still walked over 21000 steps.

I headed to Central Park first thing. Oh my word. I’m in love. The autumn colours are all coming out and although cold, it was a crisp and beautiful day. I spent over two hours just wondering around, taking it all in and let it fill me with inspiration and tranquillity. I could have spent all day there.

But I couldn’t – I had a building to visit! Lots of people recommended the Rockefeller over the Empire State Building. Going after 3 was annoying because it was $10 extra because it was “sun-set-time”, despite them also advertising the sun wasn’t going to set for over an hour and a half.

The views made it worth it. They were stunning and it felt like you were on top of the world. Again, having a clear day made it perfect – you could see for miles!

Day 3

I was conscious of time on my last day with flying out. I went back to Central Park, taking a route I hadn’t done previously and enjoying the chance for fresh air. I then returned to the library for another writing session.

Just behind the library, Bryant Park had been turned into a Christmas market. It was fun spending an hour looking at the stalls, despite not buying anything. There was a great atmosphere there which helped me to forget I was nervous about flying home.
